FAST DIVING – A SPORT FOR EXTREME
Ice diving is carried out in the cold season with the use of special equipment, safety net and a scuba diver passing a special training course. Such dives are carried out by athletes through special ice holes arranged in the ice cover of a freshwater or sea reservoir at a water temperature in the range from -1.9 ° C to + 4 * C of low visibility and illumination with limited fast access to the surface.
EQUIPMENT OF AN ATHLETE FOR ICE DIVING
The set of equipment for ice diving differs from summer equipment and includes the following accessories:
winter rubber suit (dry performance) with special insulation;
a special diving mask covering the entire face of the athlete;
flippers (without heel, with heel) selected taking into account the wetsuit (2-3 sizes larger);
scuba gear, consisting of two cylinders, mouthpieces, connecting hoses, regulators, pressure gauges.
The equipment should also include:
special alpine pin
necessary for cutting ice holes in ice.
powerful flashlight in a sealed case for scuba diving;
scuba diver’s belt with additional weights within 1.5–3 kg with the possibility of adjusting the weight depending on the weight of the athlete;
safety cable to help navigate under water and return to the dive site;
rubber gloves with insulation.
Divers in the winter period of time must wear thermal underwear to help maintain body temperature when diving.
ENSURING SAFETY FOR DIVING UNDER ICE
When diving in the winter time, a number of rules must be observed:
scuba regulating equipment should be made of a special material resistant to low temperatures;
it is advisable to use a wetsuit equipped with inlet and outlet valves for supplying and etching gas for descent under ice;
the diver must have the skills to maintain neutral buoyancy in order to ensure a safe location under ice;
it is good to know all the signals given by the safety cable.
When conducting ice diving competitions, the organizers must provide all safety measures, including medical assistance.
The best option when diving under the ice is the descent of two athletes at the same time, and the third participant provides insurance with a cable.
PROCEDURE FOR NECESSARY MEASURES FOR DIVING UNDER ICE
Preparation for scuba diving under ice requires special operations:
preparing wormwood for immersion;
providing a warm tent or car for dressing up athletes;
fasten the safety cable to the diver’s belt;
Before diving, check the gas control equipment;
periodically give conditional signals after diving.
THE MOST POPULAR PLACES FOR FAST Diving
Athletes involved in the ice are considered optimal for training:
Lake Baikal (RF) is partially covered with ice in winter;
Hokkaido Island (Japan) with visibility under water up to 20-30 meters;
Svalbard island (Norway) diving is possible all year round;
Tignes Island (France) the most convenient place for beginners;
The White Sea is one of the most popular diving sites;
McMurdo (Antarctica) water temperature during the year – 1.8 * C.
Recently, ice diving has become increasingly popular. The offer of convenient places for training in extreme sports is increasing, and the offer of special equipment for scuba diving is expanding.
