EXTREME WATER JUMPING AT HIGH ALTITUDE
Many have seen competitions in diving from a tower at international competitions and wondered how athletes can jump from such a great height of 10 meters. But for some people this was not enough, and they founded a new extreme form – high diving.
Officially, the world federation was created in the mid 90s of the 20th century. One of the most popular varieties of this extreme entertainment is cliff diving. The first competitions in this sport were held in 2009. The season for athletes includes 8 stages of the World Series, in each of which they make a series of jumps from rocks 27 meters high.
In 2013, international sports organizations decided to include high-diving in the program of the next World Aquatics Championship. Athletes made 5 jumps from the same height as in the World Series. The tournament feature was that women who jumped from 20 meters also participated in the competition.
The most famous athlete is Briton Gary Hunt. He began his sporting career with simple diving, but then decided to jump off the cliffs. At the moment, he won the World Cup and 4 World Series.
But there are also separate competitions for high divers. They consist in jumping from the highest height. There are only two rules in this extreme sport: the jump must have a rotation of more than 180 degrees, and the athlete must swim himself, without any help.
The first record in high diving was set by American Dave Lindsay in 1982, who from a height of more than 51 meters made a risky jump from a rack on the bones. All the rules were followed, and the athlete himself received a serious fracture of the clavicle.
A year later, another American extreme player Dana Kunze was able to break his record, who was able to jump from a height of 52 meters with a triple somersault and calmly get out without injuries. Then many tried to break his record, climbing to an increasingly significant height. But all the athletes could not get out on their own, which means that the record could not be counted.
In 2015, the jump of the Swiss extreme Lazo Schaller gained immense popularity. It was made from the Cascato del Salto waterfall from a height of 58.8 meters. The speed of entry into the water exceeded 120 kilometers per hour, but the jumper did without serious injuries. The Swiss trained for a long time in order to complete this attempt, making jumps from lower heights. To organize his jump, a platform was built on the edge of the waterfall, and the upper layers of the water were softened so that the fall would not end tragically for the athlete. But the global high-diversion community refused to accept this record, claiming that both conditions were not met. Since the extremal jumped off the cliff with a “soldier”, without making rotations, a group of divers got out of the water. Thus, the official high-diving record still belongs to Dana Kunze with his jump from a height of 52 meters. And Schaller can be awarded the title of the best jumper from a cliff. Many extremals have tried and are still trying to improve the American record, but so far, no one has succeeded.
High diving is gradually developing more and more, gathering both athletes from all over the world in cliff diving competitions, and just fans of jumping from the rocks. The most favorite place for extreme people is the Mexican tourist center in Acapulco. There are almost always going to people who want to get adrenaline from a jump from the rocks.
Those wishing to try such dangerous jumps should remember that only those people who followed all safety rules and trained for a long time can survive and not get serious injuries. Therefore, beginners should start by jumping from 3-10 meters into the pool.
