Extreme sports are increasingly attracting those wishing to get a fair amount of adrenaline. There are already many winter sports that are considered extreme, among them several types of snowboarding: snowboarding, it’s just skiing from the mountain with the help of a board. A more extreme sport is freeride, when a descent from a mountain with a board passes along a virgin snow, and a halfpipe is a descent from a mountain with a board while performing acrobatic jumps and upheavals. Ichthyander, the hero of the story of the same name by Alexander Belyaev, is familiar to many. He could be under water indefinitely, playing with dolphins, but nowhere in this literary work does he mention that he was engaged in any activity under water. He saw amazing underwater worlds, but could not convey to anyone his impressions of them.

The first person known in history to paint landscapes under water was the Irishman W.H. Pritchard. He was born in 1866, lived for 90 years and all his life portrayed the underwater world. His paintings were a great success, they were readily acquired. Pritchard had many followers in the 20th century. One of them is Andre Laban, who worked in the team of Jacques Yves Cousteau, for 21 years. He was a chemist by education, so he developed a composition that makes the canvas suitable for work in water. Continue reading
